2/15/2014 3:14:24 AM

2. Restoring the Command Prompt

The primary interface you have in Server Core is the command prompt. If you accidentally close it, you can restore it with the following steps.

StepAction
1.Launch Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
2.Click New Task.
3.Type cmd in the Create New Task box, as shown in Figure 2. Click OK.
4.Close Task Manager.

3. Renaming the Computer

Normally, you rename the computer through the Advanced System Settings of the Computer Properties page. However, these pages aren’t available in a Server Core installation. Instead, you need to rename it with the wmic command. The basic syntax is

wmic computersystem where name="%computername%" rename name = newname

For example, if you want to name the computer SC1, you can use the following command:

wmic computersystem where name="%computername%" rename name = sc1

The output indicates “Method execution successful.”

Tip

You can use the actual name of the computer in place of %computername%; however, the name of the computer starts with a long set of random letters and numbers after “WIN-”. For example, the computer name might be WIN-JMGZRUP4XHF. You can view the computer name with the command hostname.

You must reboot the system after renaming it. The next section shows you how.
