Microsoft Lync Server 2013 : Persistent Chat Deployment (part 3) - Installing the Persistent Chat Server Role

12/4/2014 8:27:44 PM

Installing the Persistent Chat Server Role

After the Lync topology has been updated to include the Persistent Chat pool, the Lync Server role installation can be run on each Persistent Chat server that has been added to the topology. The following procedure is used to install Persistent Chat on one of the servers that has been defined in the topology:

1. Log on to the server using an account that has local administrative rights on the system, and execute the setup.exe file from the Lync media.

2. If it’s not already installed, a prompt appears regarding the installation of Microsoft Visual C++ X64 Minimum Runtime as a prerequisite. Click Yes to install the software.

3. When the wizard displays, either browse to your intended installation location or accept the default location, and then click Install.

4. When prompted, read the software license terms, click the I Accept the Terms in the License Agreement option if you agree to the terms, and click OK.

5. The core components of Lync Server 2013 are now installed, which includes the Lync Management Shell and the Lync Deployment Wizard. After the Deployment Wizard launches, click Install or Update Lync Server System.

6. The wizard now determines the current state of the local system and provides links to various installation options as needed. At Step 1: Install Local Configuration Store, click Run.

7. At the Configure Local Replica of Central Management Store screen, keep the default option of Retrieve Directly from the Central Management Store, and click Next.

8. The commands required to install a local configuration store are executed. After the installation is complete, click Finish to return to the Deployment Wizard.

9. At Step 2: Setup or Remove Lync Server Components, click Run.

10. At the Set Up Lync Server Components screen, click Next.

11. The commands required to install the Persistent Chat software are now executed. After the installation is complete, click View Log to determine whether any errors occurred during the software installation process. When finished, click Finish to return to the Deployment Wizard.

After the software is installed, a certificate needs to be installed for the Persistent Chat Server. As with other Lync Server roles, Persistent Chat supports certificates issued by a third party or an internal CA. Continuing with the Deployment Wizard, the following steps are used to request and assign an SSL certificate from an online internal CA:

1. At Step 3: Request, Install or Assign Certificates, click Run to begin the certificate request.

2. When the Certificate Wizard screen appears, a single certificate type is displayed for the Default certificate. Click Request.

3. The Certificate Request Wizard now launches. Click Next.

4. At the Delayed or Immediate Requests screen, online and offline request options are presented. Since this request will be sent to an internal CA, select Send the Request Immediately to an Online Certificate Authority, and then click Next.

5. At the Choose a Certification Authority (CA) screen, the online certificate authority systems that have been detected by the wizard are listed, as shown in Figure 5. Keep the default option of Select a CA from the List Detected in Your Environment, and then use the drop-down menu to select the target CA for this certificate. When finished, click Next to send the request.

6. At the Certificate Authority Account screen, the option to specify alternative credentials for the certificate request is presented. If the user account of the installer does not have sufficient permissions to request a certificate from the CA, then the option for alternative credentials should be selected, and the credentials of a user account that does have the required permissions can be entered. If the installer account has the required permissions, simply click Next.

7. By default, the wizard creates the certificate request using the WebServer (SSL) template. If a different certificate template is planned, select the option for Use Alternate Certificate Template for the Selected Certification Authority, and then enter the name of the template into the Certificate Template Name field. When finished, click Next.

8. At the Name and Security Settings screen, enter a friendly name for the certificate, which makes it easier to identify later. Also, choose a bit length for the certificate. If the private key will need to be exported later, select the option for Mark the Certificate’s Private Key as Exportable. Click Next.

9. At the Organization Information screen, enter the name of the organization and organizational unit into the corresponding fields, and then click Next.

10. At the Geographical Information screen, select the country from the drop-down menu, and then enter the information into the State/Province and City/Locality fields. Click Next.

11. The names that are automatically populated into the certificate by the Wizard are now displayed. Click Next.

12. The opportunity to enter additional Subject Alternate Names outside those automatically determined by the wizard is presented. For a Persistent Chat Server, typically no additional names are needed. Click Next.

13. At the Certificate Request Summary screen, review the values for accuracy, and then click Next.

14. The commands required to generate the certificate request file are now executed. Click View Log to determine whether any errors occurred during the certificate request process. When finished, click Next.

15. At the Online Certificate Request Status screen, the results of the certificate request are shown. To view the properties of the certificate, click View Certificate Details. At this point, the certificate has been installed to the local certificate store on the system, but it has not been assigned to Lync. To immediately assign the certificate to Lync, keep the default selection of Assign This Certificate to Lync Server Certificate Usages, and click Finish.

16. At the Certificate Assignment screen, click Next.

17. At the Certificate Assignment Summary screen, review the summary information, and then click Next.

18. The commands required to assign the certificate are now executed. Click View Log to determine whether any errors occurred during the certificate assignment process. When finished, click Finish to return to the Certificate Wizard.

19. The default certificate is now assigned to the server, as shown in Figure 6. Click Close to exit the Certificate Wizard.

Now that the software has been installed and the certificate has been assigned, the final step is to start the Persistent Chat services for the first time. Continuing with the Deployment Wizard, the Persistent Chat services are started as shown here:

1. At Step 4: Start Services, click Run.

2. At the Start Services screen, click Next.

3. The commands required to start the Persistent Chat services are now executed. Click View Log to determine whether any errors occurred during the process of starting the services. When finished, click Finish to return to the Deployment Wizard.

4. Click Exit to close the Deployment Wizard.
